CWBA Meeting: Ad Hoc Committee on Sexual Harassment and Sex Discrimination in the Judicial System

The CWBA has formed an Ad Hoc Committee on Sexual Harassment and Sex Discrimination in the Judicial System to track our progress towards internal and external reforms as prioritized following our recent Town Hall on the Colorado Judicial Crisis.

The Committee will be chaired by CWBA Board Member Kathryn Starnella, and working groups will be created to solidify and address each component of CWBA’s action plan. Please RSVP to participate via Zoom in the first meeting. At this meeting, we will identify the Ad Hoc Committee’s purpose, goals, and priorities, and we will split everyone into working groups to identify and delegate tasks and set internal deadlines. 

Please select your interest in one or more of the following working groups when registering:

  1. Judicial Evaluation, Discipline, and Retention Reform.
    a.    This working group will identify avenues to reform the judicial performance evaluation, discipline, and retention processes.
  2.  Independent monitor creation.
    a.     This working group will explore and identify avenues and ways to create an independent monitor (individual or body) within the judiciary for discrimination and harassment complaints
  3. Transparency.
    a.    This working group will identify means to bring transparency to: the procedures for the independent investigation into allegations, engagement with legal community stakeholders throughout the process, including before consequences and outcomes are finalized; and to the numbers and types of complaints received by relevant public bodies regarding judicial officers or judicial system employees. 
  4. Law school, law student, and law clerk outreach.
    a.    This working group will identify ways to support law students and law clerks, to educate them about their rights at work, and to gather information to help protect students and law clerks.
  5. Exploration of in-house reporting mechanism.
    a.    This working group will explore the feasibility of an in-house reporting mechanism or database of information about complaints against judges.
  6. CLE development.
    a.    This working group will develop a webinar on bystander silence and attorneys’ and judges’ ethical obligations to report sexual harassment. This working group will also identify other topics for CLEs.
